In the summer of 2014 we were introduced to the families at the El Tejar dump. This is one of the moments we knew God was beginning to prepare our hearts to minister, love, and serve the people of Guatemala. We began to visit the dump on a weekly basis to serve a meal for the men, women, and children working in the dump. Since then Lazaro and Glendy are doing a excellent job as they continue to minister and disciple the people who are directly involved in the dump.
This past summer we tried to provide meals to the families in the dump as much as possible. One morning, we had a list of things to do but we decided to take a meal consisting of hot dogs, chips, and juice to the families working in the dump. Of course, the morning did not run smooth ranging from crying kids to individually wrapped hot dogs!
As we drove down the long dirt road leading to the dump, we passed a house that we had visited a couple of years ago. I sensed God telling me to stop by the house on the way home. If we have any leftovers, we always leave them with the families in the dump or to the gatekeeper. However, this day I felt God telling me to keep the leftovers and give to the family in the house. I had no idea how many people lived in the house or how many people were at home that morning. We knocked on the rusted, tin gate and seven precious children opened the gate. The older children were in charge as there was no adult home at the time. Of course, they did not turn away hot dogs, chips, and coke! As we started passing out the hot dogs we were surprised to count exactly 7 hot dogs! The perfect amount to feed the kids! As we drove away I was flooded with so many thoughts.– How are the children going to explain to their mother that two strange “gringas” showed up with a meal? There was the perfect amount provided for that specific meal. A reminder that God provides for us–He loves us–He cares for us.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:22-24
